One Mold Endless Projects: Coaster Edition

Updated: Feb 9

Welcome to the first installment of a fun new series called, One Mold, Endless Projects. This series is all about creating inspiration, getting the creative juices flowing, and building on the idea that a little can a long way, especially when it comes to resin. I know it can feel like there is never enough but I hope this reminds and inspires you to create using what you have. Some of my favorite projects, came from things I found at home. As always everything below is meant as inspiration and tools to help you on your resin journey!

If you need help deciding what addins you would like or inspiration on what to preserve in the resin, click the link below to see my previous post titled, "Top Items to Preserve in Resin."

Today we are focusing on the coaster mold, there are different variations of the mold out there like the geode coasters, flower coasters, coasters in so many shapes and sizes. So lets start talking about the projects you can make with this versatile mold!

Standard Coaster

Of course when you think of a coaster mold you would think of its initial use. I think of a standard coaster as one that is super simple, just resin with one or two add ins like glitter, alcohol inks, or flakes. This a style that every beginner resin artist creates due to it's simplicity. I personally enjoy mixing alchohol inks and flakes because they make a beautiful combination. The alchohol inks will blend whatever colors you choose together, and then the flakes add an extra sparkle.

Teal Resin Coasters

Using a simple addins in the mold gives you time to get used to it and. Over time you can mixed them together, half pigment half glitter. You can do simple clear on one side and pigment on another. Alchohol inks and glitter, the list goes on and on.

So if you are a beginner and are looking for an easy first project this is the one for you. Plus it can easily be repeated.

Ocean Coaster

The next project you can try is a little tougher but it always turns out beautiful. So this is an ocean coaster, there are many different designs and each one will look different.

Ocean Beach Resin Coaster

They are generally made with sand, light blue resin, dark blue resin, and white resin. Mix the sand with a small amount of resin, and layer it down on one side of your coaster. (Bonus: You can find sand and shells at the dollar store) You can add shells if you want to as well for added detail.

Once you have that down take your light blue resin and pour two small rows. Then with the dark blue resin and fill in the remaining space. Together these colors make up your ocean.

Now for the sea foam! You will take the white resin and along the edge where the sand meets the light blue resin pour a white line. Repeat this along the other light blue line where it meets the dark blue line.

With a heat gun or a small fan on low, gently push the white back. It should spread apart similar to the picture you saw above. Creating the sea foam effect. It's a stunning effect and makes beautiful coaster set, art piece and more.

Resin Flower Coaster

This next project is one of my all time favorites, and everytime I see a resin artist making this I stop and watch. It is a resin flower. So while you may think I am referring to a resin coaster with pressed flowers, I am actually referring to a unique 3D resin flower. Although the former is still gorgeous, I love pressed flowers in resin. It is so easy to create!

Resin 3D Flower

First pick your flower color, the picture shows blue. You are going to pour some of your colored resin into the middle of your mold, and then around the rim pour clear resin. This next part is optional, but you can add some glitter, or glass shards in the middle for added sparkle.

Then you will take your white resin and start in the center, and pour a spiral outwards from there. Once you have your spiral take a tooth pick and go to the outer circle and drag it into the middle. Repeat this step until you have the amount of petals you want. Then to add a point to your petals, take your tooth pick and pull the tip of your petal away from center. Once you are done you have a stunning 3D flower.

Hanging Coaster Art

This next project involves taking your coaster and turning it into a piece of hanging wall art. First things first you want to design out your coaster like normal. So any add ins you like, colors, etc. What makes this project different is you can extra pieces to it.

Flower Resin Wall Art

I like to add chain and beads to the bottom to add an extra something. I attach chain to the top in a loop to hold it up and boom! A hanging coaster art piece. You can get creative and attach multiple pieces together. One time I took three square resin coasters, and attached them into a beautiful mermaid wall art.

You can make make multiple variations of these hanging coasters. These can even double as suncatchers. Add some crystals to the bottom and you are good to go.

These are only a few of the many resin coaster projects you can make today. You can find alot of add ins and resin crafts at the dollar store if you are starting fresh. They have glitter, sand, crystals, glass and so much more. I hope this post got you inspired to create and make more with this fun mold. Plus depending on the mold shape you pick your project will turn out unique.
