How to Make Beaded Suncatchers

Updated: Feb 1

Beaded suncatchers are beautiful and come in many forms, there are countless ways to make one. Once made they add whimsy and glittering light to any room or patio they are on. They can be as elaborate as you would like them to be. They can be made for inside your home, outside in your yard or even smaller versions to hang in your car!

As always everyhting below is used for inspiration. You can add or eliminate anything to fit your tastes. You can make a suncatcher using just about anything. These are three different styles I have found and learned how to make. The examples are not my own work, but are meant for inspiration for you and others. The goal behind a suncatcher is to catch and reflect the light, I always suggest you use something crystal and mix with something glitter and metal to get the best results.

Here is what you will need for most of the examples below. Anything extra that is specific to a design will be added to the directions for that design.

  1. Crystal Beads/Glitter Beads/Glass beads. (Any that reflect the sunlight and will sparkle.)

  2. Wire or String to hang the beads from

  3. Chain or string to hang the final product.

  4. Jewelry findings like o-rings, hooks, etc.

  5. Depending on your base you may need a drill to attach your beaded chains to.

  6. A base, can be anything you want even just a piece of wood or a lid. Get creative can be a wire shaped moon, can be a chain link, a resin art piece, you just need something to attach your beaded pieces to.

Below are different examples of suncatchers, and how to make them.

Windchime Suncatcher

Windchime suncatchers look just like windchimes! You can even add metal or glass pieces to make a dual windchime and suncatcher. You can really get creative with your base and your pieces.

What you need:

  1. A round base, so a metal, wood, or plastic circle.

  2. Your beads and string of choice

  3. Eye catching bottom accent piece, (in the image to the left, you see they used glass)

  4. If you want yours to chime as well use a metal piece like the forks in the example below!

  5. Chain or string to hang your finished piece.

Heres how to make it:

Step 1: You take your base and decide how many strands you would like it to have, and how you want them displayed. (straight down, draped, twisted, etc).

Step 2: You cut your string and wire to match, you can do different lengths or all the same. Cut the amount you need to the length you want it.

Step 3: Add your beads, you can use glass or crystal to catch the sun or get fancy and add pearls and sea glass the example above!

Step 4: Add your display statement bead (One per strand). This can be a large crystal pendant, large glass or metal pendants for sound)

Step 5: Attach the strings/beaded wire to your base. Attach it based on your chosen string or wire, so if it is elastic you can tie the knots and use glue to cement it or use jewelry findings like a hook to attach it.

Step 6: Attach your chain or string to hang your final masterpiece in the room of your choice!

Single Strand Suncatchers

Single strand suncatchers are exactly as their name says, they are made of only a single strand of beads, crystals and charms. They can be made as big or small as you would like, and can even be made to hang from your car mirror. Most do not have an elaborate base just a loop, hook, or chain attachment.

Here is how to make it:

Step 1: Use your string and wire of choice, cut to your desired length.

Step 2: Attach your beads and charms

Step 3: add your statement charm at the bottom (Picture used crystal ball pendants)

Step 4: Attach your string to you base whether its a chain loop or a hook.

Curtain Suncatchers

The next suncatcher on the list is the curtain suncatcher, it is made with multiple strands and usually displayed in a straight line. They can be as big or as small as you would like them to be. Perfect for indoor or outdoor use.

Heres how to make it:

Step 1: Choose your base, you want something that is in a straight line, example we have uses wood. Any straight base will work

Step 2: Choose your beads and attach them to your string/wire of choice.

Step 3: Attach your string or wire to your base using hooks or the tie off method.

Step 4: Use chain, or wire to create the top of your suncatcher so you can hang it up.

Suncatchers are an easy and fun project to make. There are way more styles out there than the ones above. You can change or alter as you want to make it your own. They will make a great gift for you or your loved ones. Do not forget to comment your favorite style below, and stay tuned for more styles in a future post.
