Name of Business Owner: Jules Wright
Name of Business: JuliesJewelsDesigns
Open since: 2019
Where can we find you?
I sell on Etsy, although I used to sell on shopify too for a small amount of time.
What do you make/sell?
I make and sell a variety of beaded crafts from beaded bookmarks to small car suncatchers. I also like to create items with resin, like jewelry trays, wall art, and resin coasters. I continue to expand and will be soon adding in larger suncatchers to my store. Alot of my crafts have a fantasy/fairytale theme as I am also an avid reader and love the worlds they create.
What inspired your business name?
My business name is a play on my name, and the nickname my family calls me Jules. I mixed them together to get JuliesJewels, then I decided to add designs. I am a huge fan of reality design shows like project runway, so I loved the idea that my pieces are my designs. The end result was JuliesJewelsDesigns.
How did you get started?
I have been crafting for years. I started with entry level beaded making small stretch bracelets, which led to me learning more advance beading techniques. I continued to make jewelry, and in 2019 a friend of mine showed me her seller profile on Etsy. She convinced me to open my shop not long afterwards. The store grew and evolved over time as I branched out into resin art and making other beaded projects like beaded bookmarks.
How did you choose your products?
I chose my products based off things I loved but do not see on the market. Which is why I play with dragons, fairies, and other fantasy/fairytale themes. I feel like there is a large community of people who love these things, but cannot find merch for them. I also love playing with color so my art is filled with it. When it comes to designing my products, I pick one item as a vocal point like the rose petals in the resin tray, and then add accents that make it stand out. I love to design this way so I do not overdesign.
Where would you like to see your business in five years?
In five years, I hope to have my business in a storefront. I would love to have a business filled with handmade items made by me and other artists. I would love to be face to face with my customers and hear more about what they like and who they are. I am also hoping to step up my aethetic to make it more detailed and unique. And continue to play with color.
What do you want people to know about you and your business?
My business is built on the idea that everything I make is made beautiful just for you. I design my art with the point of making you smile. I love designing and creating new things, and testing my ability. I also love to do custom work so you can make it your own. I have listed a product special for a young boy who loved to listen and watch me craft on tiktok lives. It is one of my favorite moments.
What is your favorite product in you shop?
My favorite product in my shop is the red queen beaded bookmark. I love the red queen heart charm and the way the colors play off each other. It is one of the first times I have been able to catch the essence of a villain in one of my pieces. I also love the way it looks in the book, it really catches the eye. Especially the Haunting Adeline novel I paired with it. I love all my products but this one made me so proud after I finished it.
What advice do you have for anyone thinking about starting their own small business?
If you are thinking about starting your own business I say do it. Take the risk, but do the research. There is so much more to Etsy and online ecommerce shops, than just posting a listing. You have to know your customer, do your keyword research, and continue to add to your shop. Allow yourself room to grow and change. Find something you love to make, do not just do it to make money but because you enjoy it. If you just create to make money then you will burn out. Its the committment to your craft that will push you forward when sales are low and when you feel you cannot keep going.
